Eva Fricke, Riesling Rheingau, 2023
Germany, Rheingau. 100% Riesling.
With 11 hectares of vines, Eva Fricke has quickly built a strong reputation since establishing her winery in 2006 for very precise and well-made Rieslings. Born in Bremen before embarking on a career to learn from other wine producing regions, she has worked in France, Australia, Italy and Spain. Her first international acknowledgement came in 2013 when awarded “Newcomer of the Year” by the gourmet magazine Falstaff.
Her interest in wine started when she did an internship at Buitenverwachting in Constantia, South Africa at the age of 18.
As entry level wines go, this is impressive. Pale greenish in colour. Delicacy and freshness on the nose. Lifted and ethereal even if without enormous complexity or extract. Saline qualities on the palate, rich, complex combined with a long and refreshing finish, a bottle could very easily vanish rather quickly. As the warmer weather seems to be arriving, then sitting outside with sliced toast and smoked trout pâté with a chilled bottle of this wine would work to perfection.
