Domaine de la Butte, Bourgueil, Le Pied de la Butte, 2020

France, Loire. 100% Cabernet Franc

Having covered blends above, this is not a blend: it’s 100% Cabernet Franc from the middle of the Loire. However, the robust characteristics of this wine work just as well with lamb as any of the blends listed below.

Bourgueil sits between Angers and Tours. It has a maritime influence on the climate as well as a continental influence. With a diverse collection of soil types - gravel soils producing fresher, fruitier wine) and tuffeau limestone generating more structured and complex wines - plus the combination of warm summers and cool autumns the area ensures that Cabernet Franc retains good acidity while developing complex aromas and flavours. It is under most people’s radars, but when the conditions are in harmony the region can deliver some exceptional wines that will age very well.

Although this is a relatively young wine, it is drinking well today and will certainly continue to evolve for a further five or more years. Cherries on the nose, a crisp acidity and tannins work well together with aromatic fruits that would be perfect over a Sunday lunch. Very stylish for the price.
