Constantia Glen, Two, Constantia, 2022
South Africa, Constantia. 62% Sauvignon Blanc, 38%
I visited this winery about six years ago and have been buying a variety of their wines for home ever since. This classic Bordeaux blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon - 62% : 38% - has been barrel-fermented and matured on the lees for 12 months in 600 litre demi-muids, of which 10% were new oak. The Constantia region has been making wine 1685 and is located just north of Cape Town, making it a popular location for wine tourism.
A distinct mineral tension works with the ample floral flavours - lime, fig and blossom - that sit alongside a soft oak spiciness with an abundance of fresh, but tight, fruit. It’s a rather intriguing combination of flavours that have considerable weight and depth. It will age for another 10 years but is very appealing today.
You could enjoy this wine with Bream, Hake, Grey Mullet, and Sea Bass. All served with vegetables in rich and complicated sauces. Roast pork and all the trimmings would be a delight, and simply slicing Gruyere, Comté, or Shropshire Blue with a glass or two would be a good, lunchtime snack.
