La Rioja Alta, Viña Ardanza Reserva, 2017
Spain, Rioja. 80% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha.
I have frequently recommended this wine in the past: this is the latest vintage on merchants shelves. It’s still young and will evolve slowly over the next 10 years: pulling the cork today is definitely not too early. It is a very classic wine in style, and if you enjoy old-school Rioja, then this is a perfect example.
Matured in American oak barrels, with 36 months for the Tempranillo and 30 for the Garnacha after a fermentation in stainless steel. The Tempranillo vines are around 30 years old, and the Garnacha 17, both with an altitude of around 550m.
Cherries and plums on the palate with a firm structure and finely integrated tannins. There is a richness here that sits very comfortably with food. You will pick up the vanilla and cloves from the oak, with hints of caramel and light spices. Although, the suggestion is lamb, this would work to perfection with beef or chicken. Buying this wine year after year is a no-brainer: it just delivers every time and the change of vintage makes a difference, but they seem to be able to work miracles regardless of the weather.
