Domaine André Vatan 'Les Charmes' Sancerre, 2023

France. 100% Sauvignon Blanc.

The regions of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé sit opposite each other, straddling the middle of the Loire River, France’s longest. A maritime climate where the Sauvignon Blanc rules the plantings with a smidgeon of Pinot Noir and Gamay. However, it is a grape that has been defined by the style of Sauvignon from New Zealand over the last couple of decades, and finding an example that has light, balanced acidity sitting in harmony with the fruit has proved tricky.

Vintage. Starting with a mild winter, spring then saw a good budburst with promising conditions. Summer was hot and humid with a fair amount of rain, that needed focused attention to ensure no rot occurred. The harvest progressed although this patch of the Loire did see a storm that hit the vines. Overall, a good year and Sauvignons from the Central Vineyards should all be in good condition.

Yapp have been bringing in this wine for a while, and how I have missed it is an unknown element. However, the nose is restrained with only a hint of the varietal’s gooseberry elements showing forth: a subtle, delicate flavour. The palate is rather creamy, with a perfect balance here between fruit and acidity, and good, clean length. An appealing structure that slips down rather well. Grilled fish, goujons of Lotte, potted shrimps would accompany this wine. Lobster with Jersey Royals.
